Trade Lane Megacities. Ruta Central: Canal de Suez, problemas y alternativas.

Un interesante paper sobre el Canal de Suez, del ya inevitable Rodrigue y otro profesor, en este caso de la Universidad de Amberes, Noteboom. Queda ya totalmente claro que en las carreras de logística no  les enseñan que poner fecha de a un artículo es importante🙂. Según google es de 15/4/2008 y es el primer artículo en el que he encontrado el concepto de ruta circum-ecuatorial. Me pregunto si la situación que describen sobre Suez ha cambiado.

He visto algunas cosas muy curiosas:

–los peajes o transit fees de Suez son muy similares a los de Panamá. No se que técnicas  siguen para fijar precios ya que las rutas alternativas son, como veremos, seguramente mucho más caras.

–ofrecen un cuadro resumen con la evolución de las características náuticas de este canal (es decir sus dimensiones: se confirma  que es una máquina logística que se ha ido actualizando con el tiempo, 1956, 62, 80, 94, 96, 2001, 2008).

–un mapa con las rutas alternativas al Canal de Suez para ir de Blue Banana al Este Asiático: Tren hasta Moscú-Tren Moscú Golfo Pérsico (primera noticia de esta alternativa que huele a Imperio Británico); Transiberiano en sus diferentes versiones; a través del Cabo de Buena Esperanza; la Ruta del Norte e incluso a través del Canal de Panamá (no podíamos dejar de hablar de este canal :-)). Obviamente ninguna de estas es competitiva para este origen y destino pero si cambiamos este dato la cosa cambia

The Suez route is expected to remain the logical and dominant choice for connecting Asia with Europe. However, the Cape route could serve as an alternative to the Suez option on trades between Asia and South America, Asia and West Africa and South America and East Africa

aunque poco salvo que se desarrolle  el comercio sur-sur, y por lo tanto la Ruta del Sur.

The flows related to the first two trade lanes now typically pass through the Suez Canal and are interlined in hubs such as Algeciras, Tanger Med or even in more northern ports such as Rotterdam (Maersk) and Antwerp (MSC). Interlining via the Cape offers a potential alternative to the Suez route. While distances and transit times via the Cape on these routes are typically lower than the Suez route, the Cape route today still faces higher costs mainly caused by poorer vessel economics (vessels on the Europe-Far East route are on average much larger) and the lack of large scale and efficient interlining ports in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, by 2020 interlining via a hub near the Cape is expected to become more competitive compared to the Suez route due to a combination of higher Suez Canal transit fees, better vessel economics on the routes to Africa; and subject to a more competitive terminal efficiency and pricing strategy of southern African transhipment facilities in view of attracting interlining flows. This does not imply the Cape route would overtake the Suez route as the dominant shipping link between East and West. The expected emergence of the Cape route should be seen as the embodiment of a promising development of south-south trade volumes between Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa and South America.

B. Properties of great circles:
        1. They always result when a plane passes through the exact center of 
           a sphere, regardless of the plane's orientation when it enters the 
           sphere.
        2. A great circle is the largest possible circle that can be drawn on 
           the surface of a sphere.
        3. An infinite number of great circles can be drawn on any sphere.
        4. One and only one great circle can be found that will pass through 
           two specified points on the surface of a sphere, unless those two 
           points happen to be exactly opposite one another (antipodes, 
           pronounced "ant-TIP-id-dees"; the singular is antipode, pronounced 
           "ANTIE-pode").  An infinite number of great circles can be drawn 
           through antipodes.  For example, the North Pole and the South Pole 
           are antipodal and you can draw an infinite number of meridians 
           (which are sections of great circles) through them.
        5. The arc of a great circle is the shortest surface distance between 
           any two points on a sphere:  It's the analogy of the old adage 
           about a straight line being the shortest distance between two 
           points (on a plane, that is).
        6. Intersecting great circles always cut one another exactly in half.
     C. Practical uses of great circles:
        1. They can be used to find the shortest route for a ship, airplane, 
           or, less happily, a missile that must cross great distances.  
        2. You can find the great circle route between two places on a globe 
           by stretching a string or rubber-band between any those two 
           locations on the globe:  It'll settle on the great circle.
        3. When you sample headings for a variety of places on the great 
           circle route and then transfer the resulting line segments onto a 
           flat map, like a wall map, you'll produce a weird-looking path that 
           forms an arc between the two places (instead of a straight line).  
           a. The reason it looks so bizarre is that a globe is a three-
              dimensional sphere, but a map is a flat two-dimensional 
              representation of that sphere:  It is necessarily distorted, so 
              your shortest route looks like a long, circuitous route on the 
              distorted flat map.
           b. That's why, if you've ever flown from someplace like London to 
              Los Angeles or from, say, Tokyo to New York, they fly you over 
              northern Canada and its Arctic climes!
           c. You might want to experiment with this with a globe and a flat 
              atlas map to convince yourself of it.  Or you can just trust me!
